JUAN PABLO GUTIERREZ GARCIA

Full Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) with 33 years of experience in Animal Breeding and Genetics. Graded as Veterinarian in 1987 and as university specialist in animal breeding both by the UCM in 1989, and Computer Engineering Management by the University of Education at Distance in 2004. From the doctorate in 1991 with obtaining the extraordinary award, extensive activity in research, teaching, development cooperation and transfer. Teacher in a variety of core subjects of undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and master’s degree, in four Spanish universities and four foreign universities, with main dedication in the UCM in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, mainly in Animal Genetic Improvement, having been Coordinator and Director of the Interuniversity Master (The UCM with the Polytechnic University of Madrid) in Animal Production and Health in its first four editions. Author of a total of 203 scientific publications of which 101 were in JCR journals (Journal Citation Reports). Participant in 72 projects, 24 of them funded in competitive calls, being the principal investigator of 11 of them, and being responsible for 21 research contracts and participating in other 27. Member of the editorial board of two JCR journals “Small Ruminant Research” and “Animals”. Among the research lines emphasis in genetics of South American Camelids, but also in the genetics of the variability and the development of software (Endog and Molkin, of wide international use) and methodological tools for the handling of populations under genetic conservation. Responsible for the management of various genetic improvement programs.

With respect to the scope of the talk, since 2006, responsible for the management of the genetic improvement program of the Pacomarca experimental farm, author of 15 publications in journals of the JCR catalog, along with 8 others in journals with objective quality indications, 8 conferences by invitation in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, France, Italy and the United States, 11 conferences, 13 courses, 3 contracts, 15 communications to meetings, supervision of 2 master’s theses and 1 doctoral thesis, having been the organizer of the “5th European Symposium on South American Camelids and First European Meeting on Fiber Animals “. Today President of the Animal Fiber Working Group of the EAAP.

Arturo Pena Bios

Arturo was born in Arequipa, Peru, and moved to United States in his twenties. Since then, he has been managing large alpaca farm operations.  His love for the Alpacas and his passion for its luxury product “The Fleece” motivated him to become an Alpaca Owners Association (AOA) Certified Judge in Halter, Fiber and Performance. In addition, Arturo currently serves on the AOA Judges Advisory Committee (JAC).

He is an alpaca expert with extensive knowledge in animal health, alpaca selection, genetics and management.  He has an educational background in Veterinary Medicine and has a bachelor’s degree in Management. Before devoting fulltime to alpacas, he had planned, organized and executed Dog Shows while serving as Treasurer at the Regional Peruvian Kennel Club Association. He also worked as a Travel Agent at one of the prestigious agencies in Peru where he developed his passion for traveling. He also organizes educational trip to Peru.

Arturo has judged across United States, Canada and Europe. He strongly believes that education is the key to succeed in the alpaca industry. Through Judging, seminars, workshops and consulting, he has assisted and guided new and seasoned alpaca breeders to achieve their goals.

Along the way, he has been recognized as a collaborator of a scientific and biomedical research about “Antibodies from Alpacas as Tools to Study Virus-Host Interactions”. His co-authored scientific research study “Do Differences in Maternal Immunoglobulin G Influence Passive Transfer and Subsequent Cria Growth in Alpacas?” was accepted for publication in the prestigious scientific veterinary journal, Theriogenology.

Arturo and his family donate their free time at the local library and at Cornell University Cooperative Extension 4-H Putnam County doing what he knows the best: creating awareness about the alpaca industry and trying to make the difference in his community.

He lives in North Salem, New York with his wife, Kat, their son, Nicholas, and their dog daughter, Sabrina. They love to spend time outdoors and take alpaca pictures.

David Andrew Merriwether

DEAN FORD

Dean, former owner and operator at Vista Del Sud (sood) alpaca stud in North East Victoria, Australia now lives in Karaka on the north island in New Zealand. 

Coupled with working fulltime in Biosecurity, Dean assists in the operation of the farm at Waters Edge alpacas with Toni, Greg and his Fiancé Lisa Charteris who also shares a passion for judging alpaca. We are focused on breeding elite grey Huacaya stud stock for the local and European market with a herd of approximately 150 Huacaya. 

Dean is committed to the alpaca industry, having undertaken various volunteer leadership roles for the Australian Alpaca Association (AAA)  including past President of Victorian Central Region (VCR) and convenor of Colourbration in Bendigo,  Australia’s largest alpaca show. 

In early 2015 Dean completed his AAA judging apprenticeship and loves being able to contribute to the future of our stud stock industry. 

Dean has a passion for fibre handling and classing wool, having successfully completed his professional Wool Classer certificate in 2012 to become a registered wool classer with AWEX. In 2013 Dean assisted in the implementation of the alpaca fibre classing programme within the Australian TAFE system and successfully completed the national curriculum for classing of alpaca fibre.

Being both an Australian and New Zealand accredited judge, Dean was honoured to be asked to judge the 2020 New Zealand National Alpaca Show (breed and fleece) and is committed to the growth and development of new judges in New Zealand piloting a new and dynamic apprentice judge training programme with the assistance of his fiancé Lisa. 

Dean says “With the hands on approach to the development and education of our new judges, our show industry will continue to prosper offering a positive window for marketing capabilities to our breed society”. 

Raúl C. Rivera Velásquez

He is currently the Marketing Manager in Michell & Cia. S.A. and in charge of the Hand Knitting Yarn sales in Asia, Europe and North America. He has experience in the Alpaca Industry for over 20 years. He was the Chairman of Alpaca Fiesta 2018  and was a Director and Organising Board of Alpaca Fiesta 2021. He was Director of the Chamber of Commerce of Arequipa (2013-2015). He is a member of the Academic Consulting Board for the Marketing Career at the Instituto del Sur (Arequipa).  He obtained his  Bachelor of Business Administrations from California State University, Fresno USA) and his MBA from the University of Leicester (UK).

Dr. Maria Wurzinger

Dr. Maria Wurzinger is Senior Scientist at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, (BOKU), Austria. She has more than 20 years of experience of designing and setting up community-based breeding programs in marginal areas in Latin America and Africa. She is working at the interface of animal breeding and social sciences as she puts the livestock keeper at the center of her research using farmers´ centered, participatory research approaches.

Dr. Birgit Fürst-Waltl

Dr. Birgit Fürst-Waltl is a Senior Lecturer in Livestock Sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), Austria. In addition to teaching and supervision of students, her main focus is on functional traits, the development and improvement of genetic evaluations and the definition of total merit indices within breeding programmes. In this context, she cooperates closely with the relevant organisations. She mostly works in ruminants but has also been involved in projects dealing with other livestock species.
